Caring for any new member of the house can always be quite a challenging task, especially if your furry little friend happens to be a kitten. As kittens are naturally inquisitive and demanding, it is crucial that you are ready for the arrival of the fluff-ball.
Like any animal, it is important that you take the kittens away from their mothers at just about the right time. At around eight weeks of age, the litter should begin eating solid food, making it the perfect time to separate the kittens from their mother. If for some reason, the kittens are separated early; you have to make sure that they are given special care to make up for this. Getting the right cat food is a tricky business but there are companies out there who can help show you the way.
If your kitten is not ready to go onto solid food and there is no mother to nurse them, you must remember not to give them cow’s milk as this can make them poorly and can cause bouts of diarrhoea. Many pet stores will sell milk replacer for young kittens and it is always best to phone up just to make sure.
Once that you have taken your kitten home, you must remember that just like humans; moving house can be a frightening and a stressful experience. It is therefore important that you reassure the kitten at all times and make sure that they know where the litter tray is along with their food and bed. During this readjustment period it is likely that your nervous kitten shall enjoy hiding in those dark crevices in your house. It’s therefore a great idea to block entrances to fireplaces and other dangerous places where your little feline may decide to venture.
Also, if you really want your kitty-kat to feel welcome in its new home, a bed near a warm radiator will do wonders to making it feel secure. Cutting a legible hole inside a cardboard box with bedding will be perfect to reassure the kitten as well as shooing away the temptation of hiding under the sofa or anywhere else.
Of course, now that your kitten is in your care, it is your legal responsibility to look after them and keep them in the best of health, because a healthy kitten is also a happy kitten. Taking him to the vets is not only an opportunity for a check up, but you can also learn and reassure yourself that you are looking after your pet to the best of your abilities. Any questions or queries you have about your kitten can be asked at the local vets. As kittens pick up a multitude of illnesses including feline influenza amongst various others, vaccinations are imperative to the health of your cat. The first course of injections should be administered at around 8-9 weeks with a following dose at around 12 weeks of age.
If anything, it is important that you enjoy playing and looking after your kitten so that you create a loving bond that will last a lifetime. Making sure that your cat is a happy chappy is the best way of making sure that you are looking after your kitten.

Our family PC blew up last week so I’ve not been able to do much as I’m confind to my old laptop
. We’ve installed a new power supply but that didn’t work and now we’re waiting for a new mother board to arrive! Ordered it last Wednesday so it shouldn’t be too long now
I’ve got a lovely kitty pic of Kitna doing Damian’s hair as soon as I can get back on that ‘puter
.
Kitna is obsessed with the red dot now, she sits outside Damian’s bedroom door waiting for him to bring it out to play. We decided that we’d better get her a red dot of her very own so I got this one for her from Amazon
. Having one upstairs and another downstairs is blowing her tiny mind, lol
.
Here she is calling for the red dot on youtube
. She pretty clever because she knows it’s caused by something in Damian’s hand, but she’s pretty dumb because she thinks everything in Damian’s hand will cause the red dot ![]()
Who says you can’t train a cat? Kitna knows to sit on the carpet and not to come into the kitchen and to just wait patiently when I’m opening her tin of tuna at night
. Ozzy used to do exactly the same thing
. We trained Ozzy to knock on the patio door, too, when she wanted to come in, that was so cute
. I thought I had a video but I can’t find it, when I do it’ll be up here
. We’re trying to train Kitna to knock on the patio door too but she’s just not getting it yet ![]()
